Description

PSY 4713 Community Psychology
3 Credit Hours
Community Psychology is the study and application psychological solutions to community-based social, mental health, and environmental problems. With this in mind, this course provides a substantive overview of relevant theory, research and action in community psychology. It also explores the relationships between stressful environments, supportive social systems, and individual and family well-being. An emphasis will be placed on the values, applied research, and action focused on promoting the welfare of the whole community, especially under-served populations. Areas of focus will include individual and community strengths, not just their deficits, and on prevention, self-help, individual and group empowerment, cultural diversity, and changing local conditions through organizational, community, and societal-level action.
