As a foundational discipline within the life of the larger academic community, the philosophy program at Palm Beach Atlantic University provides students the opportunity to engage critically the history of Western thought from within a Christian worldview. As students reflect about the nature of reality, the possibility of knowledge, and the question of moral and aesthetic values, they are provided the opportunity to develop skills in critical thinking, writing, and reading. Additionally, students are encouraged to respond constructively to perennial philosophical and moral issues. The ultimate goal of the philosophy program is to prepare students for leadership in society by providing them with an intellectual foundation, and critical and constructive thinking skills. The philosophy program also aims to prepare students for graduate study.

A word from the Philosophy Department

Behind the scenes, professors Craig Hanson and David Horkott have been hard at work crafting a new Philosophy Department curriculum. Our chief concern has been to offer a major that affords the student the flexibility needed in order to get the coursework done, together with a rigorous, well-balanced education that prepares you for the variety of places we know you will be going in life.

This effort has resulted in a great many curricular changes and program requirements. Some of the courses that you have known and loved have disappeared. But many more fascinating and wonderful courses have arisen to take their place.

Under our new changes, you will be free to examine the fabric of the universe, the mysteries of medieval philosophy, the current state of cutting-edge epistemology, the nebulous web we call the human mind, and so much more.

We invite you to take a look at our new digs, and ask us any questions that you might have.

Henceforth, we declare the academic year 2008-2009 the “Year of the Philosopher”.

May you think well, live well, and be well.

-Craig Hanson, Ph.D. and David Horkott, Ph.D.
