A Social Security Number is issued by the US Social Security Office for the purpose of reporting employment wages.  F-1 students authorized for one of the following types of employment are eligible to apply for a social security number:
 
- On-campus employment
- Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
- Optional Practical Training (OPT) 

 
 
To apply for a social security number:
 

STEP 1 – Gather your documents.

**If you are applying for an ineligibility letter for a Drivers License, Work letters are not required; however, you must obtain a DSO letter. 

  • Documents showing immigration status
    • I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record) or admission stamp in the unexpired foreign passport.
    • I-20 Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status
  • For Employment Purposes: Documents showing work eligibility
    • Letter from your DSO that identifies you, confirms your school status, and identifies your employer and the type of work you will be doing
    • Letter from your employer / supervisor that describes your job, your employment start date, the number of hours you will be working, your supervisor’s name, telephone number, signature, and date.
  • For Driver’s License Purposes (to receive an ineligibility letter from the SSO)
    • Letter from your DSO that identifies you, confirms your school status and confirms you are not employed
  • Documents showing your age
    • Your foreign birth certificate if you have it or can get it within 10 days. If not, the SSA will consider other documents such as your passport or a document issued by DHS as evidence of your age.
    • The SSA will ask for evidence to show you do not have an SSN. If you lived outside the United States for an extended period, a current or previous passport, school and/or employment records, and any other record that would show long-term residence outside the United States could be used to show you do not have an SSN.
  • Documents showing your identity
    • I-94 Arrival/Departure Record with unexpired foreign passport or admission stamp in the unexpired foreign passport. You may obtain your I-94 here: I94 - Official Website (dhs.gov)

STEP 2 –  Submit your application form online here: Request a Social Security number | SSA

  • I-20 
  • I-94 
  • Passport 
  • Letter from DSO 
  • Letter from employer (not required for ineligibility letter/drivers license)

 

STEP 3 – Make an appointment online at a Social Security Office to complete your application

process. After you complete your online application, you will be given the option to make an appointment to visit one of the SS Offices to complete your application. *Please note, you can check other Social Security Office (SSO) locations for earlier appointment availability. Simply enter the zip code of the SSO where you would like to schedule your appointment. While the West Palm Beach office is the closest to campus, you are not required to use this location. 

 
  Please bring a copy of the card to the ISS Office AND for on-campus employment, the Human Resources Office.
