F-1 students have four immigration options after completing their degree:
-
Depart the US within 60 days of completing the degree (from end date on Form I-20).
- This is also referred to as the "grace period." For example, if a student completes their degree on May 6th, then they would have to depart the US by July 6th.
If a student does not depart the US within 60 days (or complete another option), this would be considered violating F-1 status, and the student could be subject to deportation.
-
Continue in F-1 status by changing education level at the same or a different institution before the 60 day period.
- Student must notify the Admissions Office of their intent to transfer and provide an acceptance letter.
-
Apply for post-completion OPT before completing degree.
-
Apply for change of status to another non-immigrant visa before the 60 day period.
